Thrissur District

Image of Thrissur PooramThrissur, the land of Pooram, is the cultural capital of Kerala. Kerala Kalamandalam, The Kerala Sahithya Academy and Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy are all located here. The original name of this centrally located district of Kerala is Thrissivaperur in vernacular, which was distorted to Trichur.Thri is a Sanskrit prefix for thiru in Tamil both meaning Sri and something opulent.Ur is land. The land with the title of Siva = Thrissivaperur. The cultural heritage, historical importance, archeological acumen etc.make this district a class apart. Many rulers like he Zamorin of Kozhikode,Tippu Sultan of Mysore and Europeans contributed their share in shaping Thrissur.Rja Rama Varma of Kochi popularly known as Sakthan Thampuran was the architect of Thrissur town.Thrissur is famous for the Pooram festival (April – May) which paved the way for her to find a covetable place in the world tourism map.Pooram is the grandest temple festivities in Kerala. It was Sakthan Thampuran who ordered for this festival to be celebrated in front of the sprawling Thekkinkadu ground.

Thrissur, the heritage town established by King Rama Varma Shakthan, is known for its spectacular Pooram. The presence of heritage monuments, religious sites, academics, colourful festivals and pageantries made it the cultural tourist capital of Kerala.

The Swaraj Round, the circular road in the centre of the town surrounding the 65 acre Thekkinkadu Maidan, is rated as the largest round in the country. It is the venue for the grand Pulikali held on the fourth day of Onam. The Vdakkunnathan Temple, built in the traditional Kerala architectural style, in the Maidan is the iconic monument of Thrissur. The 1,000 year old temple devoted to Lord Shiva has several decorative murals on it. The wooden work of the temple I s truly exceptional. The site has been declared as a National Monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act.Recently, it received the UNESCO Award of Excellence for the best conservation strategies and for resorting its heritage.

The Thrissur Pooram is held in front of Vadakkunnathan Temple in the months of April – May.Named after the former King, the Shakthan Thampuran Palace, also known as the Vadakkekkara Palace, is one of the important palaces of the erstwhile Maharaja of Cochin built in a blend of traditional Kerala and Dutch architectural styles. The palace, spread over six acres, has been converted into a heritage museum and is managed by the State Archaeological Department. The giant canon is the notable attraction of the museum; it also has the largest collection of excavated megalithic materials in Kerala.

Besides these, the Thrissur town also houses the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi.A visit to these academies provides a deep insight about the artistic and literary wealth of Kerala.Vadakkechira is one of the four oldest ponds in Thrissur built by Shakthan Thampuran. The State Zoo,Puthanpally, several other old churches and temples are located in and around town make Thrissur a must visit tourist spot.

You see the two in combination everywhere, in the borders of the white cotton mundu worn by Keralan men ,in the ceremonial umbrellas hoisted over temple deities as thy’r processed on elephant back during festivals, and in the makeup of the kathakali hero, framed by his trademark jewel- encrusted headdress…Experience our unique Kerala Tourism activities and Kerala Tour Packages......
