Peppara Wildlife SanctuaryThe Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary was set up primarily to augment the ater supply of Thiruvananthapuram.When a dam was built across the Karamana River in 1983 to meet the increase water supply needs of the city, the Paruthipally range become the catchment area of the dam reservoir. The entire area making up the sanctuary drains into the Peppara Dam reservoir that spreads across nearly 8.82 sq .km.

There are 13 tribal settlements in the sanctuary – 11 of them in the Athirumala section and 2 in the Thodayar section. Total area of this sanctuary is 53 sq km.This is a hilly terrain 100 m to 1717 m above sea level. The summer and winter temperatures are 35 Degree and 16 Degree respectively. Southern moist deciduous mixed forest covering 60% if the tract along the lover slopes.

Nestled in the Western Ghats,about 50 km from Thiruvananthapuram city, it lies on the way to Ponmudi.The sanctuary actually consists of part of the Palode reserve and part of the Kottoor reserve. Apart from the dam and reservevoir,forests,eucalyptus plantations and streams spread across 53 sq km.

Tigers, panthers, elephants, sambar and gaur can be seen here. The barking deer, mouse deer and the wild boar are also found. The lion – tailed macaque and the Nilgiri langur represents the simian species, whereas the king cobra and python represent the reptiles.

By Air : The nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport,55 km.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Thiruvananthapuram Central,50 km.

By Road: It is 50 km from the Thampanoor bus stand. Only a few direct buses operate from Thiruvananthapuram. Board a bus for Vithura (14 km from the sanctuary) or Nedumangad (30 km).The sanctuary is accessible from Vithura on the Thiruvananthapurm – Ponmudi Road.

Location: 8° 07’ – 8° 53’ North and 76° 40’ – 77° 17' East.50 km northeast of Thiruvananthapuram city in Nedumangad taluk.
