Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Wildlife of KeralaDeclared a sanctuary as ealy as in 1958, the lack of sustained conservation efforts hampered Neyyar’s growth until 1985, when renewed efforts under a wildlife wing transformed it into a haven for exotic flora and fauna.

The sanctuary stretches from Neyyatinkara taluk to the Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu.It is the drainage basin of the Neyyar River and its tributaries – Mullayar and Kallar – which originate in Agasthyarkoodam, the second highest peak in Kerala (1868 m).

With 12,000 hectares (128 sq km and 60 sq km core area) of natural vegetation spread across an undulating terrain and the 1,868 m Agasthyamala Peak as its highest points, the sanctuary is interspersed with rushing brooks, flat meadows and gentle slopes, making it an ideal trekking destination. The Neyyar River, which originates from the Agasthya Peak, has an irrigation dam built across it here.Summer and winter temperatures are 35 Degree and 16 Degree respectively.

The Agasthyamala region supports a wide variety of plant species, and the variety of its flora and forest types make it an ideal gene pool reserve.Elephants, gaur, sambar, barking deer and the endangered Nilgiri tahr are found here, apart from reptiles such as the cobra, python, viper, rat snake and flying snake. The sanctuary is also a popular spot for watching birds.

The diversity of the flora at Neyyar makes the sanctuary an ideal gene pool preserve. There are nearly 109 rare plants in the region. Medicinal plants abound in the Agastiar hills. Forest types include west coast tropical evergreen, southern hilltop tropical evergreen, southern moist mixed deciduous forest, southern sub tropical savannah, reed breaks.

The tourism attractions are crocodile farm, lion safari park, boat rides on the reservoir, and trekking.Kerala Tourism Development Corporation operates regular trips to Neyyar.A bird watcher’s paradise, and this legendary mountain is accessible by foot from Kotoor near Neyyar Dam and Bonacaud which is 28 km away.Recommended season for trekking is from December to April.
