Cities of Kerala

Small scale and relatively relaxed, Kerala cities and towns are all within easy reach of each other. The most popular tourist destination is undoubtedly the great port of Kochi (formerly Cochin), where Kerala’s extensive history of peaceful foreign contact is evident in the atmospheric old quarters of Mattancheerry and Fort Cochin – hubs of a still thriving tea and spice trade. The capital, Thiruvananthapuram (aks Trivandrum), almost as far south as you can go, and a gateway to the nearby palm fringed beach of Kovalam. When it get too hot at sea level,Ponmudi and the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, just northeast of Thiruvananthapuram, make a refreshing overnight break.Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are the gateway of Kerala tourism.

The pleasant town of Thrissur (Trichur), roughly midway between Kochi and Palakkad on NH 47,is convenient base for exploring the cultural riches of central Kerala. Virtually and island, surrounded by backwaters and the sea, the small country town of Kodungallur,35 km south of Thrissur,is rich in Keralan history.

Kerala’s most important Krishna shrine, the high walled temple of Guruvayur, 29 km North West of Thrissur, attracts a constant flow of Pilgrims, second only in volume to Ayappa’s at Sabarimala.

Next major city is Kozhikode (Calicut).Formerly one of Asia’s most prosperous trading capital, the busy coastal city of Kozhikode,225 km north of Kochi occupies an extremely important place in Kerala legend and history. It is also significant in the history of European involvement in the subcontinent, as Vasco da Gama landed nearby in 1498.Nowadays, with precious few historical remnants, there’s little of interest here. But Kozhikode is the gateway to Wayanad, one of the most beautiful regions of Kerala. Situated 70 km east of Kozhikode, with tracts of forest covering the Western Ghats of the Nilgiris.
