A silver of dense greenery sand which between the Arabian sea and the forested Western Ghat mountain, the state of Kerala stretches for 550 km along India’s southern coast and it is just 120 km wide at its broadest point.

Kerala or the land of coconut, as the name denotes, is ticked away in the southwestern tip of the Indian peninsula. This narrow impossibly green strip of fertile land truly looks and feels like another country and is an experience by itself – a tropical paradise, amidst a 100% literate, cosmopolitan, yet friendly populance, who were beneficiaries of an old trinity: progressive rulers, a strong Christian school system and later Communist led government. Renowned for its serene beaches, lush vegetation, mesmerizing backwaters, stunning mountains, spice perfumed air, and an amiable culture that embraces Hinduism, Christanity, Islam, Jainism and Judaism. Kerala represents a microcosm of India and Kerala tourism has been certified by the National Geographic Traveller as one of the must see places of a lifetime.

Kerala is celebrated for Kathakali; a complex and ritualized dance drama based on the ancient epics, the highly stylized martial art f Kalarippayat; and Ayurveda the primordial system of medicine that uses herbs and massage to treat a range of ailment. Kerala is one of the most progressive, literate and highly educated states in the country, yet has an easy – going relaxed atmosphere.

Boarded by the Arabian Sea to the west and Western Ghats to the eat, Kerala can be divided into three geographical regions: Highlands, Midlands and Lowlands. The Highlands slope down from Western Ghats which ride to an average height of 900 mm with a number of peaks well over 1800m in height. This is the area of Major plantations like coffee, tea, rubber, cardamom and other spices. The Midlands, lying between the mountains and the lowlands, is made up of undulating hills and valleys. This is an area of intense cultivation.Cashew, coconut, arecaunt, tapioca, babana, rice, pepper, sugar cane and vegetables of various varieties are grown in this area. Lowlands or the coastal area is made up of river delta, backwaters and the Arabian Sea and is essentially a land of coconut and rice.

Kerala is a land of rivers and backwaters. Forty four rivers criss - cross her with their innumerable tributaries and brances. The backwaters form an especially attractive and valuable feature of Kerala. They include lake and ocean inlets, which stretch irregularly along the coast. The deltas of the rivers interlink the backwaters and provide excellent water transportation in the low lands.

The rolling High Ranges form a demarcating line at the eastern edge of Kerala, separating Kerala from its neighbours. The dense forests, extensive ridges and deep ravines of the Ghats have always sheltered Kerala from mainland invaders.

Small scale and relatively relaxed, Kerala’s cities and towns are all within easy reach of each other. The River Nila has its sources in the humble Thrimurthy hills in Tamil Nadu.Flowing west through central Kerala, this mighty river empties itself into the Arabian Sea at Ponnani. On the way it flows through three districts – Palakkad, Thrissur and Malappuram.

Apart from the beautiful houseboats, the neatly manicured tea estates shrouded in mist and the wide expanse of beaches, Kerala also offers moments of serendipity to those willing to step away from the beaten tourist trail.

Paapli Amman Kovil,Thondaman Kotta in Idukki – folklore has it that a king’s treasure is hidden there, the Kombal village in the Ramakkal mountains is rustic village with a beautiful view.Pattatipara on the Manutti – Palakkad highway has a beautiful waterfall that comes alive in the rains.
